Re: Diagram

This game seems important as it is covered in both the Interact lesson 8 and the LG study guide. My question is on the best solution strategy for timing. I've also done this game using frames, like those above. On my 3rd attempt at the game, the initial set-up took 1 minute, orientation question 1 m...

Re: Q17

Hi Steves, Generally what “must be” true is easier to identify than what “could be” true or false. As a result, you want to look for the “must be” answer choices in LG, whether that means finding your right “must be true” answer or, say, eliminating your four wrong “must be false” answer choices. O...

How to best use two minutes left after the third passage

Any suggestions on how to make the best use of two minutes remaining when I complete the third passage questions? This has happened on several PTs now. Two minutes is not enough time to get through the fourth passage, let alone any of the questions. I've thought to go back and review earlier work, b...

Re: Q18 - Those who claim that

1) We do agree that allocating resources to projects whose intended consequences do not directly benefit society DOES encompass space exploration, right? That's true, at least according the claim in this argument that "most people's lives are relatively unaffected by the direct consequences of...

Q12 - To cut costs, a high school...

For Q12, I was undecided between (B) and (D), after eliminating (A)--the correct answer. Ideally, I was looking for an assumption along the lines of "if a student visits the nurse, they are ill." I was concerned that (A) would not confirm that any of the extra visits to the nurse were due ...

Re: Q13 - Bethany: Psycologists have discovered

I got hung up here on the author's assumption as described by Ilia. I did not recall learning that we could or had to presume any necessary assumptions, and I do recall a similar question where the need to assume the effectiveness for both children and adults was key to the correct answer. I thought...

Re: Q9

Thanks, Patrick! Your reply is too awesome to just hit the Thanks button. Using your strategies, I went back and was able to re-do Q8, 9, and 10 a lot faster. I still need to get faster at the plug & chug--which should come with more practice--but these individual questions became a lot less fri...

Re: Q9

I understand the answer--but not necessarily how to get to the answer. Using Matt's diagram, I am able to find it through a modified trial and error by manipulating frames close to answers (A) through (E). This makes the process very similar to Q7, where they give us this frame in the set-up. This t...

Re: Q13 - It is a given that

Thanks, Christine. I did not realize that a conditional statement could not also be a conclusion--or is the issue more a matter of which sentence supports which? The first sentence is - inspire > - intriguing; or intriguing > inspiring. The second sentence is broadening + extending > inspir...

Q2

I've crashed 3 times on this seemingly simple basic ordering game. I start off by dutifully drawing out the diagram with typical inferences--the ones that show what can't go in the early or late positions because others would have to go before or after them. With those inferences, all but G & L ...

Q21

Not sure how to approach Q21 or 22. I find few inferences from the diagram, leaving most options appearing to be possibly true. Manually plugging in each option and seeing if it can't be true would seem to take a huge amount of time.

Re: Q21 - The odds of winning any major

I had picked (A), but now I see that, in addition to the issues noted by others above, both (A) and (C) refer to MOST people while only a reference to SOME people --as in (D)--is warranted.

Re: Q15 - Proofs relying crucially on computers

I had this one narrowed down to (B) and (C), but I'm still not sure, even with the above discussions, why (C) is not correct or less supported than (B). Usually, extreme language like "whenever" is a red flag. However, the passage says that computer-dependent proofs can NEVER provide the d...

Re: Q3 - The reason music with

I also had trouble using the Therefore Test to decide between first sentence (Answer A) and the last (Answer D), but Matt's explanation makes sense. Using, Matt's explanation, perhaps a For Example test works better for this particular question: Last sentence. For example, first sentence. Will a For...

Re: Q17

I understand Cyrus' explanation why C is correct. Should I first be going through A and B to eliminate them as could be true--which takes a lot of time--or is Cyrus' point something I should have been looking for to first target C as the correct answer before going through trial and error to elimina...

Re: Q13 - It is a given that

I understand from the earlier posts that A is a premise because of the "It is a given" phrase. Without that phrase, would A become the conclusion (which is what it appears to me) or would B still be the conclusion?

Re: Q19 - None of the students talking

I first tried diagramming similar to those above and got this one wrong. It now seems easier to start with circle diagrams for this question. The circles for P and A intersect--and have some common students. The circles for P and L, and for P and R do not intersect. Since there are some within A tha...

Re: Diagram

I appreciate Matt's full solution posted above. In the course of the full solution, Matt plugs options from the questions into new diagrams many times. During an actual test or PT, should we be drawing out new diagrams that many times? I know we've been taught not to plug question-specific condition...

For B, the list is F, H, K--but the solution shows F, H, M

Re: Q19

Thanks--but I'm not following the inference trail that gets

FHMt > Kt

Since the 4th :? rule is -Kt > Ht + Mt,

I get -Ht or -Mt > Kt
