Okay, let's go back to the coin scenario that Joe referred to. I flip a standard coin (head and tail, equally likely to have either on top) twice. Here are my possible outcomes:

Head Head
Head Tail
Tail Head
Tail Tail

You can see that I have a greater probability of getting one head and one tail (because I can get either HT or TH), than I have of getting either a HH OR a TT.
