"I have decided to take a new job, and i will make $100 per hour."

The above sentence is supposed to be wrong because the two sub-sentences are not parallel though I think this is how we converse normally :)

The sentence is wrong b/c the meaning is illogical b/c the second clause should be subordinate to the first. This is why you DON'T want a sentence like this. These aren't two equally important ideas. Use the word AND when clauses (or nouns, or anything else) are of equal importance.

I have decided to take a new job, and i will make $100 per hour. (if these clauses have no relationship, then why are you connecting them with an "and"?)

I have decided to take a new job WHERE I will make $100 per hour. (shows the subordinate importance of the second clause).

i like my new job, and i make $100 per hour. (I like X, I make Y; this gives me two facts-- I like something and I make something-- and because they go together, you can use the word "and" to connect them.)

RonPurewal Wrote:your last sentence is spot on: e is wrong because it changes the meaning of the sentence.
* the original - which, remember, you can't change unless it's total nonsense - says that the publisher is making things which will subsequently be sold online, but it doesn't say by whom.
* choice e, on the other hand, asserts that the publisher itself is going to sell the things. that's an immense change in meaning (and moreover, how many publishers sell their own books online?).

you are also correct that the construction 'to be sold' is passive voice. in fact, the passive voice is necessary here, because you don't know who is going to be selling the books. (compare the analogous sentence 'there is still plenty of food left to be eaten').

Thank you, Ron

in SC, most of the cases we will face at least 2 remaining choices which are grammatical and one of which is wrong because of meaning problem. The meaning problem may be

1. one of the meaining/choice is not logc
2. one of the meaning/choice is further from the meaning of the choice A. so though that meaning is logic, it is still considered incorrect.
3. one of the meaning/choice is wordier than the other choice.

often we can eliminate 2,3 choices of mechanical grammar errors such as "they is" . However, be ready with 3 kinds of meaning error above for SC.

in every recent official problem i've seen, the wrong answers have all been actually wrong -- either because they were grammatically wrong, or because something about their meaning wasn't reasonable.

i am copying this question again
The largest trade-book publisher in the US has announced the creation of a new digital imprint division, under which it will publish about 20 purely digital works to be sold online as either electronic books or downloadable copies that can be printed upon purchase.

A) works to be sold online as either electronic books or
B) works to sell them online, either as electronic books or
C) works and it will sell them online as either electronic books or as
D) works, and selling them online as either electronic books or as
E) works, and it will sell them online as either electronic books or

my doubt : regarding option E whats preventing me to see the parallelism between
it will publish about 20 purely digital works, and it will sell them online as either electronic books or downloadable copies that can be printed upon purchase.

i find this structurally parallel .even if i go by logical parallelism then isn't the two italicized portions can seen as two works that The largest trade-book publisher would be doing ?

kindly guide me Ron .what am i missing here ?

The core structure of choice E is in boldface here:
The largest trade-book publisher in the US has announced the creation of a new digital imprint division, under which it will publish about 20 purely digital works, and it will sell them online as either electronic books or downloadable copies that can be printed upon purchase.

Those two things don't make sense in parallel.

Also, as I mentioned in the second post of this thread, "it will sell..." is illogical. We're talking about a digital imprint division, not a sales division.

HI, Ron

I had some troubles understanding what you mean as "faulty parallelism" in choice E

from my perspective,

In choice E,
I think it is mainly two independent clause joint by "and"
it first "has announced sth" and then " will sell sth" (as per my own understanding, "and" stands for a series of actions, like" I eat supper and then sleep)

also, in choice B, you say "to" is inappropriate here for showing purpose

but the publishing of 20 digital works could have the purpose of selling them online, couldn't it ?

just correct me if I am wrong, thanks!

For complete clarity I might add "at my new job" to the end of your sentence, but otherwise it's fine.

Hi Ron. Want to make sure in choice c: The largest trade-book publisher in the US has announced the creation of a new digital imprint division, under which it will publish about 20 purely digital works and it will sell them online as either electronic books or as downloadable copies that can be printed upon purchase.

Dose the two bold parts can be regarded as parallel?

If you're looking ONLY at mechanics (always a bad idea), then, sure, those things look parallel.

The problem is that they shouldn't be parallel.

A "digital imprint division" does just that-- imprinting. Publishing.
An imprint division doesn't sell books.

for “ to” in choice A and B

in choice A,“to” serve as “adjective” to modify works

digital works to be sold

in choice B,“to” serve as “adverb” to show purpose

which is logically incorrect

Please correct me if I am wrong,Thanks!

Hi Ron,

I still cannot eliminate E. Does imprint division publish books? I agree with you an imprint division does not sell books, but I don't think they publish books. In the original sentence, "under which it will publish about 20 purely digital works, and it will sell them online as either electronic books or" If we can say this division publishes digital works, then I think we can say it sells digital works.

I notice your posts pointing out that the core sentence of choice E is "the publisher has announced..., and it will sell...", which shows faulty parallelism. But can I understand the parallelism is under the subordinate clause, so that "under which it will publish...and it will sell"?

Thanks.
