SC Deborah Aguiar-Velez, founder of Sistemas Corporation,

by dianapaolasanchez Fri Jun 11, 2010 6:12 pm

Deborah Aguiar-Velez, founder of Sistemas Corporation, has written a computer textbook in Spanish for people who speak Spanish and so then do not have to rely on translations from English.

a) for people who speak Spanish and so then do
b) for people who speak Spanish, and then they
c) for people speaking Spanish who
d) so that people who speak Spanish
e) so that people can speak Spanish and then

I think the correct answer is C, but I am not sure. Do the word "speaking" modify to "people"?

Thank you

Kindly underline the incorrect part in the question.

Also pls check whether option (A) is correct. Will "do" be there.

(A) for people who speak Spanish and so then
(B) for people who speak Spanish, and then they
(C) for people speaking Spanish who
(D) so that people who speak Spanish
(E) so that people can speak Spanish and then

OA is C. I would like to understand why D is wrong? D sounds much better than C and I couldn't find anything wrong with D.

you might want to double-check this one; (d) is definitely the best of the five choices.
if this really is an official problem, and it has been transcribed correctly, then there is absolutely no way that (c) -- or anything else other than (d), for that matter -- is the correct answer. just no way.

What is your understanding of when it's appropriate to write "____, and then _____"? What kind of relationship would you expect between the two tenses?

The tenses will normally be the same, yes.

What's more important here is the meaning.
"In the construction "A(,) and then B", A and B are separate things that happen in sequence.

James wrote a book and then published it on the internet.

First our mechanics will inspect your car, and then our detail team will clean its interior and exterior.

"And then" is inappropriate for a cause-effect relationship (such as the one in this problem).

thank you, Ron, perfect explanation.

I have difficulty to choose between two meanings, both of them grammatically correct, but one of them distorted meaning, such as choice B in our problem.

Ron, do you have any skill/tip for choosing between the two meanings ?

There are no "tricks". This part is just real-world common sense.
If the meaning of the sentence is reasonable on planet earth (and is not outrageous, counterfactual, self-contradictory, or ambiguous), then the meaning is fine.

Hi,Ron

can you clarify my analysis on the incorrect choices, thank you~

in choice A,B,C

it makes no sense to say that “XXX has written a computer textbook in Spanish for people who speak / speaking Spanish (it is redundant and doesn't make much sense)

also,in choice C
people speaking Spanish who do not have to rely on translations from English.who narrows down the scope of people → if these people do not rely on translations, then why should textbook be written in Spanish

only D makes sense by using ”so that“ showing a purpose

Thank you!
