A. together"”and that thus represents
seems okay

B. together"”and this has represented
talking about past

C. together, and it represents
and cant be used for cause-effect

D. together that was representing
was representing, it doesnt anymore - wrong meaning

E. together to represent
butchers the meaning

rschunti Wrote:Archaeologists in Egypt have excavated a 5,000-year-old wooden hull that is the earliest surviving example of a "built" boat"”in other words, a boat constructed out of planks fitted together"”and that thus represents a major advance, in terms of boat-building technology, over the dugout logs and reed vessels of more ancient vintage.
A. together"”and that thus represents
B. together"”and this has represented
C. together, and it represents
D. together that was representing
E. together to represent

This is GMATPREP question. I chose "E" which is wrong. So what is wrong with "E" and which one is correct answer and why.

Can anyone explain how to approach this problem from a VTVF (Verb Tense Verb Form) perspective given that each answer uses a different verb tense/form?

Sorry, but I don't understand what you are asking.

At first glance, I thought you were just asking whether certain verbs are right or wrong.
But, you've actually taken the time to invent (and explain) a specialized abbreviation. So, you're probably asking something more specialized. Which is... well, I have no idea.

In any case, please ask a more specific question(s). ("Tell me about all the verbs here" is much too general for a forum post.)
What do you already understand?
What don't you understand?
What construction(s), specifically, are you having issues with?

Hi Ron,

Let me clarify. Given that the verb form and tense of "represent" changes in the answer choices, I wanted to know how to pick the correct answer based on the correct usage of "represent".

This item still represents xxxxxx, so the present tense is appropriate.

For now I'll assume you understand why the past-tense forms are wrong. (Ideally, you should indicate which versions you do or don't understand!)

"Has represented" implies that this was true at one point, but isn't anymore.
It's like the example of "I've lived in Florida" in this thread:

Hi, What is the issue with Option C?

in choice C there's no second dash. thus, in that choice, '...and it represents...' would have to be parallel to something else that's also to the right of the dash.
but no such thing exists.

(note the contrast with the correct answer, in which there are 2 dashes. in the correct sentence the modifier between the dashes can be 'lifted out', leaving the correct parallel structure.)

also, the use of 'and' in C makes no sense.

'and' (used WITHOUT 'thus' or 'so' or any other such word) implies that the two parallel structures represent separate/independent ideas.
clearly that's not true here, since the first observation is the reason for the second one!

the correct answer fixes this meaning issue by appending 'thus'.
