Question from Manhattan Logical Reasoning Guide

by jaf51200 Sun Nov 10, 2013 1:20 pm

First off, I'm really finding the book helpful so thank you!

I do have a question though.

On page 40, problem 14, in the 3rd edition book, the answer explanation says that this stimulus has three complementary premises which support the conclusion:

universities should promote
the free flow and dissemination of ideas
+
universities with right to patent
have incentives to suppress information
+
suppressing info is incompatible with the
obligation to promote free flow of ideas

===>universities should not be entitled to patent inventions by faculty

So basically its P+P+P ==>C

But I interpreted this stimulus as containing two premises and an intermediate, which then leads to the final conclusion:

univerisities should
promote the free flow
and dissemination of
ideas
+
universities with right
to patent have
incentives to
suppress information

===>universities suppressing info of patents is incompatible with universities obligation to promote free flow of ideas

===>universities should not be entitled to patent inventions by faculty members

Premise one + Premise two seem to really lead into/support my IC, which then leads into and supports the final C.

Any explanation or feedback would greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hey Alexander,

That's a great read on it. There's no right answer with something like this, because a premise, by definition supports the main conclusion. So your read is totally legit, but so's the books! : )
