Q9

by sheffieldjordan Fri Mar 11, 2011 9:04 pm

I am missing something on the answer for this one.

"What is the maximum possible number of different schedules for the five lectures in which those philosophers who are discussed are discussed in alphabetical order?"

The answer is (a), 2.

If "O" can be only on lecture 5, how can you have any other alphabetical order besides KLMNO?

Or do I not understand the question correctly?

Ahhh! I think you just assumed that the fifth speaker must lecture on Ockham. There is a difference between the following two claims:

1. Only Ockham can be the subject on week five.
2. Ockham can only be the subject on week five.

That means that while Ockham can only be the subject on week five, Ockham is not the only subject the speaker in week five can lecture on.

This means that both Ockham and Plato can be subject in week five and leads to two possibilities:

K L M N O
K L M N P
1 2 3 4 5

Let me know if you still have a question on this one!
