Is B wrong because we don't know if the shift away from a communal tradition is "recent" and because this doesn't capture the author's opinion as well as D does? I first thought D didn't talk enough about the concerns raised in the second paragraph, but I guess it at least mentions them and it does actually include the author's response to those concerns.

I think the bigger problem with (B) is that it's talking about controversy among scientists, rather than patents. (Which might arguably be causing some controversy, but (B) doesn't even talk about patents.) For big-picture questions like main point, the answer should best encapsulate the passage as a whole, and it can be helpful to make your own summary (just a few words or a sentence) and then compare answers to that.
