Q7 - Gerald: Unless a consumer secures his or her

by ohthatpatrick Mon Jan 15, 2018 1:46 am

Question Type:
ID the Disagreement

Stimulus Breakdown:
G: If you don't pswd protect your internet, anyone can use it and it can't be considered illegal under current laws. It's like overhearing someone's music.
K: (It's not like overhearing music in this sense...) In the case of piggybacking wireless, you'd be parking on the curb for a while, which COULD be considered illegal under current law (like loitering/harassment).

Answer Anticipation:
Which of G's 3 statements is Kendra targeting? Is she saying,
"People CAN'T hop on to unsecured networks as they stroll by?"
"Doing so CAN be considered illegal under current laws"
or
"Doing this IS more like trespassing than is overhearing music as you stroll by"

K seems to be saying it COULD be considered illegal, because you're basically loitering/harassing.

Correct Answer:
A

Answer Choice Analysis:
(A) YES! G says it cannot be. K says it could be (considered loitering or harassment)

(B) Neither person really argues that it's like trespassing.

(C) Neither person discusses SHOULD.

(D) Kendra believes this. Gerald didn't necessarily disagree, though. He may just have failed to consider this.

(E) Neither person is talking about how our devices sometimes piggyback onto unsecured networks, without us even trying to.

Takeaway/Pattern: Try to be explicit about which of the 1st person's claims (or in rare cases, which of his assumption) is being attacked by the 2nd person. This gets you much better primed to find the right answer.

You mentioned that for (D), Gerald does not address the fact of requiring a "considerable length of time". When I first read this though, I thought that because Gerald was drawing parallels between someone enjoying music playing on someone's radio as you walk down the street , it was valid to infer that he thinks its relatively quick to use the services. (If you can use it as you walk down the street... isn't that pretty quick? You don't have to stop..)

I think I was really attracted to the "music" premise especially because Kendra starts "BUT" by talking about hearing music, so I thought by inference Gerald was assuming the opposite of what Kendra thinks.

Could you explain where my reasoning went wrong? Thanks! :D

What does it mean when it says "it's no more like trespassing than is enjoying music playing on someone's radio as you walk down the street."

Does that mean "this action is more like enjoying music as you playing on someone's radio than trespassing"?

Thanks!
