Re: Q5 - Tuna is often treated with

by ManhattanPrepLSAT1 Fri Dec 31, 1999 8:00 pm

Question Type
Explain a Result

Stimulus
We're told that treating tuna with carbon monoxid, while preventing tuna from turning brown, does not make tuna harmful in any way. However, there is a danger that more people will get sick from eating fish.

Correct Answer
What could explain these apparently contradictory claims? Well, if the tuna doesn't turn brown, more people may eat rancid fish. Answer choice (C) points out just such a possibility.

Incorrect Answers
(A) is out of scope. The issue is people who get sick from eating fish, not working with fish.

(B) is out of scope. This doesn't explain why the treatment of carbon monoxide is increasing one's risk of getting sick.

(D) explains the wrong thing. This would explain why that's the treatment that has been chosen, but not why that treatment increases one's risk of getting sick from eating fish.

(E) is too weak. Suggesting that brown tuna is not fresh is not strong enough to explain why people would be getting sick from eating tuna. Notice that in answer choice (C) the language is strong enough to create an explanation for why people get sick.

Q5 - Tuna is often treated with

I think because most customers cannot tell the difference between the not fresh treated tuna and those really fresh untreated tuna, people may get sick more. So I pick up E. Anyone can help?

Unlike C, E doesn't tell us anything about how people get sick from their preferences for not-brown fish. You were on the right track but forgot to include a vital part - the getting sick part.
