Q5 - Aaron: A prominent judge

by bnuvincent Tue Jun 08, 2010 10:12 am

I was a little unsure about choice D, it seems to conform to the stimulus. Is it because he considered it unlikely, not as stimulus said, to be fictional. Could you please explain?

The problem with answer choice (D) is the word "unlikely." The stimulus is looking for an emotional response to something we "know to be fictional."

It's simply not strong enough...

The stimulus describes how people have emotional responses to things that they know not to be true. The question asks us to find an answer choice that conforms to the principle.

(A) conforms to the principle because Fred is having an emotional response to something he knows is make-believe.
(B) does not match the principle because Tamara did not have an emotional response.
(C) does not match the principle because Raheem had an emotional response to something he thought was true.
(D) does not match the principle because Jeremy considered the actions "unlikely" rather than something he "knew was fiction."
(E) does not match the principle because Sandy did not have an emotional response.

Clear things up? It's always the little details that cause such big problems, huh!

For this question, extract the principle in your own words or basic logic:

People believe that:
(1) people are genuinely moved ONLY BY things & events that people believe are actual

YET (in reality)

(2) People are (also) genuinely moved by things that they know are fictional

(A) Correct: According to (1), Fred did not expect to be bothered by fictional ("make-believe") monsters; however, according to (2), Fred was frightened when the monsters appeared.

(B) Tamara did not have an emotional response
(C) Raheem did not know that his sister's being in the hospital was fictional (so his emotional response didn't conform with (2))
(D) Jeremy's emotional response relates to a writer's REAL act (which was not fiction)--the writer, supposedly, wrote fiction (in any case, Jeremy's response wasn't triggered by the act)
(E) Sandy did not have an emotional response, and the film's details were accurate (not fiction)
