Q4

by nnn2108 Sun Jan 18, 2015 9:22 pm

I got this question correct, I just want to write out why I think each answer is correct/wrong and get feedback.

A is correct because of lines 36-41

B is wrong because she is trying to show that "Land managers should therefore focus their efforts on fuel". If she held this defeatist view of controlling wildfires, I highly doubt she would devote a paragraph to introducing a better way of controlling fires.

C is wrong because that is what is talked about in the second paragraph. The third paragraph (where the author cites the factors of topography, weather, and fuel), does not discuss this at all.

D is wrong because lines 39-40 say that fuel isn't dependent, in fact, it is the only thing they can control.

E is wrong because while the passage does acknowledge that weather is unpredictable, and that allowing fires started by lightning to go their course is a good thing when it is damp, it does not argue that lightning will continue to be a factor. It simply states that it can be one.

Great explanation, nnn2108 !

I'll just add to your explanation of (E) that while the author does see lightning as relevant to wildfires, lightning is not relevant to why the author cites the factors of topography, weather, and fuel. All this stuff is listed to make the case for fuel-focus.

Keep up the good work :geek:
