We do not know the location of these critics. I agree with you also in being worried about "widely" misunderstood. That would be an assumption our part.
Choice D is not explicitly stated in the passage. However, look at the last paragraph. Lines 48-54. These lines have binary groupings of good-evil, powerful-powerless, wealthy-poor. We can infer that this is a broad range of social classes. These binary groupings were used by Sembene in his protagonists to develop a social consciousness.
