Q4 - High cholesterol levels are highly correlated with

by kyuya Sun Jul 05, 2015 6:54 pm

We need to find out why those in the town of Limone have do not have cardiovascular disease despite their high cholesterol levels.

(A) This doesn't help us explain the discrepancy because it doesn't differentiate Limone from anywhere else; this could be applied to both Limone and any other town or society.

(B) This could be tempting, but the line "exacerbate existing cardiovascular disease " makes it incorrect. Remember, in Limone there is nobody with cardiovascular disease, so this cannot be helpful. We want to know why they don't get it in the first place.

(C) This doesn't really do anything for the argument. It tells us that those in Limone have normal blood sugar levels, and then goes on to tell us the advantage low blood sugar levels gives people. Basically, those in Limone do not get this benefit, so it cannot benefit them, and it doesn't help explain the discrepancy we are looking to solve.

(D) Here is the correct answer. Those in Limone happened to inherit a protein that prevents blockage, stopping cardiovascular disease. Presumably others do not have the benefit of inheriting this, therefore giving this special group an advantage.

(E) This is way too vague to be right. It tells us nothing about Limone. "Some" parts of italy could just as easily exclude Limone, and therefore, give us no way to solve this discrepancy.
