i felt like i understood the stimulus better when i made the context-connection between 'taking second place to the total environment' and 'plagued by egoism'. if i'm plagued by egoism, then naturally i come first and nothing else does (environment takes a back seat).
if environment isn't first, then the architectural work must be somewhat obtrusive...
