Re: Q3 - People often pronounce a word differently

by ManhattanPrepLSAT1 Fri Dec 31, 1999 8:00 pm

Question Type
Most Supported

Stimulus
The stimulus tells us that people pronounce words differently when reading them aloud than when spontaneously spoken. But we know that computers are trained by reading samples of written material.

Anticipation
The information in the stimulus draws a comparison between reading written samples and spontaneously speaking to a computer. The former is how they train computers, but the latter is how computers will be used. Since there's a difference, there is room for error.

Correct Answer
Answer chocie (C) points out correctly that computers may not be as reliable when spoken to spontaneously than when read to from written samples.

Incorrect Answers
(A) is too strong. While the statements above present a challenge, they do not make it impossible.

(B) is out of scope. Accents?

(D) is too strong. While the statements above present a challenge to translating spontaneous speech, they do not make it impossible.

(E) is too strong. While computers are able to translate spoken speech, we cannot say that they can do so without error.

Q3 - People often pronounce a word differently

by daniel Sun Jul 31, 2016 4:24 am

Hello everyone!

I'm having a hard time with this question. Initially, I chose "D". After Blind Review, I realized how extreme "D" is. But I can't undestand for sure why C is correct. Can someone help me?

Another question: Should I be wary of extreme answer choices (e.g. ALL X is Y or X is never Y) on Inference questions?

Thanks in advance!
