Re: Q25 - At Morris University

by ManhattanPrepLSAT1 Fri Dec 31, 1999 8:00 pm

Question Type:
Match the Flaw

Stimulus Breakdown:
We know that most sociology majors are taking the class, while most psychology majors are not. The argument concludes that there must be more sociology majors taking the class than psychology majors.

Answer Anticipation:
The flaw in the reasoning is that the argument fails to consider the relative size of the two groups of students. How many sociology majors are there? How many psychology majors are there. If there were more sociology majors than psychology majors, the argument would be valid. However, if there were more psychology majors than sociology majors, the conclusion of the argument may not be true. The correct answer will also fail to recognize the relative size of two different groups.

Correct answer:
(D)

Answer choice analysis:
(A) arrives at the wrong conclusion. The argument's conclusion should be a relative comparison along the lines of "more paintings on display are from the twentieth-century than are paintings the museum owns."

(B) provides the wrong evidence. The evidence should be about an amount and not a relative comparison.

(C) contains the wrong flaw. This argument generalizes what is true of the city arboretum is also true of the city in which the arboretum is located.

(D) is correct. This answer begins with evidence about two different groups and concludes a relative comparison between the two groups with considering the relative size of the two different groups.

(E) arrives at the wrong conclusion. It should have said, "the Acme Reality website has more photos of houses than condominiums."

Takeaway/Pattern: Reasoning Structure: Comparison

Can someone walk me through this argument? D makes sense but for whatever reason I chose E. Whats wrong with E?

I am still confused about E. Should E reads like " At Acme Realty website, most of the for sale houses have photos, but most of for sale condominiums do not, So there must be more for sale houses than for sale condominiums" which I think is equivalent as the arguments.

The original argument is talking about how many soc vs. psych majors there are in the intro class.

It's not concluding, "Thus there must be more soc majors than psych majors".

So (E) would have similarly conclude about the number of house vs. condo photos on the website.

Concluding about house vs. condo overall for sale is not a good match for the original conclusion.
