Q23 - Constance: The traditional definition of

by marcus.v.p. Sun Jul 21, 2013 4:30 pm

Hello!

Is answer C wrong because Constance does not bring up whether a person with a part-time job should count as fully employed? Since Constance does not bring that into the argument, then we cannot conclusively say that Constance and Brigita disagree over that issue, correct?

Correct. Both speakers have to speak on a mutual issue in order for there to be an actual disagreement. In this case, the issue that overlaps between the two speakers is what definition of full employment applies given current economic condition - best expressed in answer choice A.

Hey Guys,

Let's take this one top to bottom. It's an Identify the Disagreement question, so we don't need to focus on a core.

Constance: T.D. of F.E. = correct. Inflation up when rate over 5.
Brigita: T.D. of F.E. = outdated/wrong.

Right away, even before looking at the answers, we can see that they disagree over the definition of full employment.

(A) CORRECT. Constance likes the definition, but Brigita thinks it doesn't apply.

(B) Neither person discusses whether the employment level ought to drop below five percent. Even Constance merely says that inflation would rise (a negative consequence that could conceivably be outweighed by positive consequences).

(C) Constance never mentions part-time employment, so we can't know her opinion on it.

(D) Again, Constance never mentions part-time employment.

(E) Brigita never mention inflation, so we can't know her opinion on it.

Hope that helps!
