Q2 - Coronary bypass surgery is

by tommywallach Thu Jan 17, 2013 12:39 am

This inference question provides a bunch of information in the stimulus. We are told that CBS is performed on people with CAD even when other therapies would be just as effective. These other therapies are less expensive, less risky, and less intrusive. This is said to be particularly true when dealing with single-vessel disease.

(A) goes too far; we don’t know about all the alternative therapies.
(B) is out of scope because the argument never discusses time.
(C) is too strong. The argument said that CBS is particularly questionable with single-vessel disease, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t also questionable with certain multiple-vessel diseases.
(D) isn’t supported by the passage. While bypass surgery is said to be more expensive than other therapies, it isn’t any more expensive when used to treat single-vessel disease.

Answer choice (E) is supported by the first and second sentences, which tell us other therapies are just "as effective," and that they "pose less risk to the patient."

Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for your very clear explanation.

However I am just a little bit confused by the stimulus. It is mentioned in the first sentence that "Coronary bypass surgery is commonly performed ... when certain other therapies would be as effective." And these "other therapies" are not only inexpensive but are also less risk.

Isn't it absurd and self-contradicting to conduct bypass surgery instead of "other therapies"?
