Q2 - Although Samantha likes both

by ManhattanPrepLSAT1 Thu Dec 27, 2012 6:21 pm

We are given the following statements:
1. Samantha likes both oolong and green tea.
2. None of Samantha’s friends like both oolong and green tea.
3. All of Samantha’s friends like black tea.

Correct Answer
Answer choice (E) must be false. Samantha likes both oolong and green tea, yet none of her friends like both. So none of Samantha’s friends like all the kinds of teas Samantha likes.

Incorrect Answers
(A) could be true. Whether Samantha does or does not like black tea is not addressed.
(B) could be true. We know none of Samantha’s friends like both green tea and oolong tea. Maybe that’s because, while they all like oolong tea, none of them like green tea.
(C) could be true. Maybe all of Samantha’s friends like oolong and black tea, and yet none of them like green tea.
(D) could be true. Not like both oolong and green tea contains the possibility of liking neither.

I'm little confused about B.

The stimulus said Samantha likes both oolong and green tea and none of her friends likes both.
Doesn't it mean none of her friends like both oolong and green tea?
Since none of her friends likes oolong and green tea, shouldn't B be Must be false?
How is it possible B is could be true? What am I missing?

And if the stimulus said Samantha likes EITHER oolong OR green tea and none of her friends likes both, can B be Must be false?

Please someone explain me.
Thanks!

You may have misread The stimulus says Samantha likes both GT and OT. None of her friends like both means the ALL of her friends DO NOT like both GT and OT. ALL of her friends like BT. But there are many types of BT. Her friends could like any number of a variety of BTs, as long as it is not BOTH GT and OT. Maybe all of her friends like OT. If all of her friends like OT, then based on the stimulus, it is impossible for all of her friends to also like GT. What I have just described is an example of where (B) could be true. As follows, (B) must be eliminated (since we are to eliminate all answer choices that COULD be true).

Does that clarify at all

If you are Samantha then you like both oolong and green tea. S------> O & GT

None of her friends likes both = All of her friends do not like both O and GT. If Friend ----------> -O or -GT

Since Samantha must like 2 drinks both O and GT, and her friends can like only 1 of the 2 drinks O or GT, it's clear that Samantha's friends can't like all of the teas that Samantha likes. Answer E

*(black tea is irrelevant, this is a red herring)
