Q19

by nazu.s.shaikh Sat Jul 17, 2010 3:36 pm

I was able to answer all questions correctly except for Q19. I had half a mind to diagram each answer choice but refrained from it because the ordering of the awards could be anything. I have nothing concrete except for my initial diagram.

G cannot be first.
Position of G&S = unknown

FH(F)-KL(K)-J

What I ended up doing for each question was beside them put the awards in order as they appeared like this:

(A) FG,KL
(B)FH, HK
(C)FL,KJ
(D) GF,LJ
(E)GK, HF

....And that still didn't help lol.

Yeah, Q19 is challenging. The key is that answer choice (D) places every language but S, and initially has G the first in the series of every language besides S. Since G cannot go first, S must go first, and so every language falls into place.

You're approach was the right direction to start, but then you should have taken the information given and applied it to the constraints, added everything in and then made a determination if only one possibility would then result.

Let me know if you still need help with this question!

I feel like a dork. Once going through each set up I noticed that every other answer choice except D had variables ( awards) that could have been placed either here or there.

D was the only one where I could make a definite answer. So thank you for the push! It made understanding the constraints much easier.

One thing I did notice though was in the question stem it didn't have a " could be true" or " must be true" just the word " true " does that imply that the answer choices 4 will be could be true/incorrect and 1 will be correct/must be true ?

Not exactly, you're not looking for something that could be true or must be true - think of these tasks more like testing your ability to draw inferences.

This question asks what would determine the ordering, if true? Think of this more like finding an assumption. The skill is different, and so too is the phrasing of the question.

This question has been around for a long time. In the past though (say more than 10 years ago) they asked this question with a very high frequency.

The new question of choice is "rule substitution." Which of the following constraints could replace constraint ____, without changing the effect on the way the game is played? Challenging!

I've attached a slide with the setup for this game as well as partial solutions for Q19.

This is really old but I think the link to the PDF is linking it to a different grouping game instead of this ordering game
