This is one is designed to with some traps! You are correct that in the beginning of paragraph 2 the author describes a hypothesis that is confirmed by research. The issue though is that no specific experiment is discussed that tested the hypothesis.
Later in the paragraph, Levi-Montalcini hypothesized something else as well--a chemical produced by tumors was responsible for nerve growth. Here an experiment about chick embryos is discussed.
So of the two hypotheses, a specific experiment to test latter is described--answer choice (A).
Incorrect Answers
(B) states the wrong hypothesis for which an experiment is described.
(C), (D), and (E) describe findings from later research but not a tested hypothesis.
