The language of this question stem has haunted students for years.
It looks like this
Y __ __ V
Those two blanks precede V and are preceded by Y.
If we were to have more blanks, like Y __ __ __ V, then it wouldn't be true to say "EXACTLY two songs precede V and are preceded by Y"
So we have a Y __ __ V chunk to fit in.
If we nailed the deductions phase of this game, our diagram looks like
n .................n. r.. n
__ __ __ S __ Z __
Where could the chunk go?
It can't fit in 1/4, since S is in 4.
It can't fit in 3/6, since Z is in 6.
So it would have to be 2/5.
n ..............n r.. n
__ Y __ S V Z __
We know we have T - W - S, so that dictates putting T and W in 1 and 3.
Only X is left for spot 7.
n ............n r. n
T Y W S V Z X
(A) V is 5th.
(B) X is 7th.
(C) Y is 2nd.
(D) T is a new comp.
(E) Sure, W could be either rock or new.
Hope this helps.
