Q13

I was stuck between D and E, and picked D. The word "several" in E seemed to be almost too insignificant to constitute African arts' influence on the art of the Western world "genderally." D seemed to be much broader in scope. What am I missing?

The project Porter was working on at the time of his death is discussed in the last few lines of the passage. It was a project exploring the influence of African art on the art of the Western world, generally.

The Western world generally includes America but is certainly not limited to it.

(A) Reverses what we're looking for. We don't want European influence on African-American art.

(B) doesn't mention African influences, at all.

(C) is like (A)--giving us evidence of European influence on African-American folk art.

(D) is consistent with what we want, unlike (A) and (C). But it's still only about African-American painters. Porter's final project was more generally about the Western world. A broader answer would be better.

(E) is correct. It takes an African (not African-American, the only answer choice that mentions African influence at all, except (D)) influence and finds it in European art--a bigger notion of "Western" than is captured by just looking at American art.
