Q13

Hi

Why is E wrong?
Since the author says "it may therefore be effective only when the negative information can be framed positively"
So I thought it requires experience to do so.
Is this unwarranted assumption like LR?
So something like "to frame positively, it requires experience..."?

Question Type:
Author Opinion

Answer expected in lines/paragraph:
Line 11-15: studies of simulated trials suggest, "Stealing thunder is, in fact, effective, at least within a reasonably broad range of applications". Line 18-20: There are several psychological reasons the technique should work. Line 48-50 "stealing thunder may only work when you can frame negative stuff positively"

Any prephrase?
The author sounds persuaded that there's SOME validity to the value of stealing thunder in SOME circumstances.

Correct answer:
D

Answer choice analysis:

(A) "concerned" is an unlikely start. The author didn't focus on a fear of stealing thunder getting too popular.

(B) This seems too narrow. ONLY during opening statements? We saw a line that was more like "ONLY when the bad stuff can be framed positively".

(C) "concerned" and "crucial" seem too strong and negative.

(D) Yes. It's a little stronger than I'd like, but yes the author was overall recognizing the legitimacy of stealing thunder in certain circumstances. This is supportable with lines 11-20.

(E) The author didn't make a big deal out of "only lawyers with lengthy experience in courtroom strategies can handle this". She said that "only bad stuff that can be framed positively" is eligible for stealing thunder. That is discussing how bad the negative information is, not how experienced the lawyer presenting the information is.

Takeaway/Pattern: The supporting sentences for this question were really the main thesis sentences of the passage, since the central topic was 'stealing thunder' and the author's opinion on the central topic is the main point.
