You are exactly right that B is correct because it is not presented in the passage. Approach EXCEPT questions by using a process of elimination. Knock out choices that do appear in the passage to find the correct answer.
(A) appears in line 14
(C) appears in lines 9-10
(D) appears in line 11
(E) is indicated by the whole description of Snell’s point of view. According to Snell, the hero freely makes a decision between two choices. He must be aware of the choices for this agency to be possible.
(B) doesn’t show up, and is correct.
