Q11

by WaltGrace1983 Sat Apr 25, 2015 6:53 pm

We are looking at the following sentence:

Moreover, no other social scientist at that time was sufficiently trained in dance to be able to understand dance techniques, while experts in dance were not rained in the methods of social research.

This sentence is really showing why Dunham was innovative (she had both) and why all of this stuff was not given the proper evaluation before.

(A) This is specifically asking about the "experts in dance" and NOT the "social scientist." .

(B) But the "experts in dance" were NOT more qualified. They were equally unqualified (both groups are missing a vital component)

(C) Out of scope. Nothing else to say about this one.

(D) Looks good!

(E) There didn't seem to be a "tension" between these two groups, let alone showing an ADDITIONAL tension (as if one was already mentioned before.

(D) is the best of all of them.

Is C incorrect because of the words "new line of research?"

(C) yeah, I think it's fair to pick on "NEW line of research".

But I think "motivated a scientist to pursue" is also unsupportable. It never says that Dunham decided to study dance ethnology BECAUSE there was a scarcity of research there.

All we know is that she WAS a dance ethnologist, and one of the pioneers. We don't know what motivated her.

We know why there was a scarcity of research in that field, and that's what (D) is getting at.

Whenever I see an RC question stem that says "we brought up ____ in order to / serves to / primarily to", I expect the correct answer to reinforce the framing idea that came right BEFORE the detail they're asking about.

So I would be looking for an answer that reinforced
"Previously, dance had been neglected as an area of social research, primarily because X. Moreover, Y."

They're asking us about "Y", so we know it's one of two reasons the author cited for why dance had previously been neglected as an area of social research.

Hope this helps.
