Q1 - Any museum that owns the rare stamp

by ohthatpatrick Fri Dec 31, 1999 8:00 pm

What does the Question Stem tell us?
Principle-Conform (similar to Necessary Assumption)

Break down the Stimulus:
Conclusion: Museums with the rare plane stamp should not display it.
Evidence: UV light will cause the red on the stamp to fade. Displaying it will damage it. Better to lock it up, even if that deprives people the chance to see it.

Any prephrase?
Because there are competing interests presented, we might need a Principle that says something like "refraining from damaging the stamp outweighs the public's desire to see it". Otherwise, the typical Prem -> Conc answer would sound like "if displaying it will damage it, then don't display it".

Correct answer:
D

Answer choice analysis:
A) The issue is whether or not to display. This principle is about how you judge the quality of a museum.

B) This is a principle about how museum display cases should / shouldn't be. The conclusion is about whether the museum should / shouldn't display this stamp.

C) This is about whether or not to use red ink, not about whether or not to display the stamp.

D) Correct! This is a rule that we could apply to the rare stamp and derive the conclusion "it should not be displayed".

E) This is about what the primary purpose of a museum should / shouldn't be, not about whether the museum should / shouldn't display the stamp.

Takeaway/Pattern: When we are picking a principle to solidify or conform to an argument, we basically are always looking for an "If Premise, then Conclusion" type answer. TONS of answers can be eliminated because they provide a principle that doesn't allow you to prove the conclusion. It would allow you to derive some tangential claim ... how you should judge museum quality, how a display case should be, whether red ink should be used, what the primary purpose of a museum is. Remind yourself of the fundamental issue: whether this stamp should be displayed.
