Acme bakery earns 35% of its revenue from baguettes and 35% from battards, while Zenith bakery earns 50% of its revenue from baguettes and 20% from focaccia.

a) Zenith earns a lower percent of its revenue from focaccia than does Acme.
B) Zenith earns a lower percent of its revenue from battards than does Acme.

My mind is being completely boggled by this one. Could someone explain this question? Thank you!

Just hopping around the forum...

B is correct.

Zenith earns 70% of its revenue from products that are NOT batards (50% baguettes + 20% focaccia), so the most revenue it could possibly earn from batards would be 30% (100% - 70%). Therefore, even there maximum batard-revenue (30%) is guaranteed to be less than the explicitly stated 35% of revenue that Acme earns from batards.

(A) cannot be inferred as a must be true, even though it could be true. We know Zenith makes 20% from focaccia, but we don't know what Acme makes. Because Acme could possibly could make anywhere from 0% to 30% from focaccia, and the answer choice is that Zenith makes a lower percent from focaccia than Acme, then Acme earning anywhere from 0% to 19.999% of revenue from focaccia would make Zenith's percentage higher, and make (A) wrong.
