P1: Background. Surprisingly, 14th century canon lawyer associations had few disciplinary hearings of members for unethical behavior

P2: Outlining 2 explanations. 1. canon lawyers acted ethically; 2. mechanism of detecting wrong-doers were weak

P3: Second explanation is better reason 1 (Author) . Counter to point 2 above - comparable group did have lots of hearings;

P4: Second explanation is better reason 2 Church itself complained about unethical behavior.

P5: Added detail (tail) Church's complaints may have lead to more closed-knit canon lawyer associations

Scale:

Canon lawyer associations had few disciplinary hearings because:

lawyers generally acted ethically VS. association served to protect lawyers
