Interesting passage!
P1: forgeries have less aesthetic merit as original; but, forgeries can be REALLY good (example: van Meegeren)
P2: some say example has real aesthetic value. Question is: since example was so good, is it inferior? Introduce Lessing (Author opinion: Lessing is convincing)
P3: Lessing: forgeries are inferior artistically, not necessarily aesthetically. Aesthetic is technique, Artistic includes lelvel of innovation. Forgers = no innovation.
P4: Author uses Lessing's idea to evaluate van Meegeren - great technique, not artistically great because no innovation.
Scale:
Side 1: forgeries have no aesthetic value
(some critics)
Side 2: forgeries have aesthetic value, but not artistic
(Author, Lessing)
