Passage Discussion

by chike_eze Sun Jul 03, 2011 10:22 pm

Passage Structure:

Modern Movement Supporters (Paragraph 1)
- Claimed to stand for X, but contradicted X in practice

Described the movement (Paragraph 2)
- Strong ideology
- Suppressed bad apples, over-emphasized innovators

Reason for decline (3 and 4)
- Strong ideology, weak practicality
- Strong ideology = expensive to execute
- Low adaptability in changing environment

My notations are evolving... but I've been writing more stuff next to the paragraphs, instead of using symbols like O1, O2, S1, etc. And it seems to work a little better for me (so far anyways).

Please provide feedback on my initial understanding of the passage. I read and finished notating in 4 minutes.

Writing in the margins is great if that's what works best for you. Find a notating practice that suits you--it sounds like you are.

Your understanding of the passage seems solid. I added a little to beef up your outline below (in bold) based on my own. There's always a balance to strike between notating clearly and not writing too much. I like to highlight dates in my notation--even if it's just circling them--because I find where dates are provided there's usually a question about them.

Modern Movement Supporters (Paragraph 1)
- Claimed to stand for X, but contradicted X in practice (AUTHOR)

Described history of the movement (Paragraph 2)
- Strong ideology, not popular but high-minded
- 1945: domin. mainstream
- 1950s: domin. criticism

- Suppressed bad apples, over-emphasized innovators

Reason for decline, late 20th cent. (Paragraph 3)
- Strong ideology, weak practicality
- building methods evolving - from few to many/fragmented
- Strong ideology = expensive to execute
- Low adaptability in changing environment

Post-modern (Paragraph 4)
- get that exposing structure = unnecessarily limit.

- AUTHOR Summary: MM Pros. inflex. re: ideals contrib. to decline

Here's a Scale and Passage Map for this passage.

Image

Passage Map:

P1: Scale is outlined. Proponents of Modern Movement vs. eventual demise.

P2: Description of how passionate, stubborn, and insistent MM's followers were.

P3: Description of how MM trend declined, what factors ultimately make MM an unfeasible architectural ideal.

P4: Final epilogue of how Postmodern movement won.
