It's so simple, and yet not.
"The only" introduces a sufficient condition:
The only fruit on the table are apples.
Fruit on Table --> Apple
"Only" introduces a necessary condition:
Only pigs enjoy rolling in mud.
Enjoy rolling in mud --> Pig
