LG: Chapter 9 In/Out Grouping Pg378 Diagram Setup

by JasonT877 Wed Jun 07, 2017 1:40 pm

Hello All,

As I compare my diagram with the one on page 378, I can see that I missed an inference between M~>-L and L~>-M

One or more of six violinists---Greene, Holiday, Lui, Mann, Underwood, and Wilson---will be selected to perform at the year-end concert. No other violinists will be selected. The following conditions apply:

If Holiday is selected, then Mann is not selected.
If Lui is selected, then both Mann and Wilson are selected.
...

I understood the second rule as : L--> M L-->W -W-->-L -M-->-L
However, on the diagram on pg. 378 shows a link between M--> -L and L --> - M

Someone please help me understand this error, if possible.
Thank you :?: :)

I think you're just looking at one of the (worst) typos in the book, sorry!

Check this ERRATA page any time you're otherwise pulling your hair out wondering, "WTF is going on?"

The graph on p. 378 in my book is correct (no arrows between M and L going from "in" to "out"). However, I still don't get why at least one of L/M ought to be out as shown in the T-chart on p. 379.

For example: L ---> M ---> ~H ---> U. Clearly both L and M are "in."

Am I correct in suspecting that in the T-chart (p. 379) under "out" we should have "H/M" instead of the current "L/M?"

Thanks.

Yup, you're right.

Stupidly, the ERRATA page linked above actually gets it wrong AGAIN!

"pg.379 Diagram
Incorrect representation of placeholders
U above H; L above M These should be written as options: U/h under In; L/M under Out."

Jeez. Now we need an errata page for the errata page. :roll:

I suppose two errata make a right. :D
