I need translation help on this rule

by cdjmarmon Sat Jun 09, 2012 7:25 pm

I cant remember if I saw this rule on a game or if someone asked me this but I have it written down on a piece of paper and its driving me crazy.

"No avengers fan shares a room with someone who is not a avengers fan."

So if we have people who are avengers fans and people who are not avengers fans. Does this rule mean:

1. All Avengers fans share a room with someone who is an avengers fan?
2. If your an avengers fan then you do not share a room with someone who is not an avengers fan?

Im kinda lost on this one. It seems like it could go either way.

So if we have people who are avengers fans and people who are not avengers fans. Does this rule mean:

AF ---> ~Share with ~AF

We do not have to say that the AF will share a room with another AF. It could be the case that the AF does not share a room at all. (Depending on the type of game/set-up)

How do you negate that?

If by negate, you mean look at it from the perspective of the contrapositive, it would be:

Original:

AF ---> ~Share with ~AF

Contrapositive:

Share with ~AF ---> ~AF

The idea in the necessary condition in the original conditional is the idea of not sharing with a non-AF. So you either share with a non-AF or you do share with a non-AF.

The first part about the AF person, yes.

Also, there is no way for a non-AF person to be with an AF person. As once we have an AF person, we know he/she cannot be with the non-AF person!

Nice explanation Timmy! And great that you caught the nuance in the rule that an Avengers fan may not even share a room!!!

This is the Not both rule.

Avenger fan = A
Not Avenger fan = B

A --> not B
B --> not A

The rule explicitly states which two items cannot go together. It does not say anything about which items can. i.e., A could go with A, but not necessarily. A could go with C/D/E, but not necessarily. or A could be alone, but not necessarily.
