WP Carey MBA at Arizona State University

by Eitan Thu Jul 31, 2008 10:24 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to get an idea of my chances for admission to the W.P. Carey MBA program at ASU. I have yet to take the GMAT, but hope to score at least a 600, shooting for above 700.

My undergraduate record is probably the weakest part of my profile. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a BA in Economics and Philosophy with a 3.2 GPA. However, I competed on the wrestling team during college and also worked during the school year. I imagine this will help me out.

Professionally, I started out in Chicago working as an analyst for a company that provides research tools for traders at many of the big banks and hedge funds in NY and Chicago. I was quickly promoted to Account Manager and was moved to NY to handle a number of the company accounts. Currently, I am an assistant portfolio manager at an asset management firm in the Phoenix area.

I'm also wondering if you think my background is strong enough to apply to stronger programs than the WP Carey MBA?

Any feedback you have would be great.

Thanks,

Eitan

Eitan,

Thank you for your inquiry.

The WP Carey program is not all that competitive. With a 3.2 GPA, a mid-600 GMAT and your professional and athletic experiences, you should be quite safe. Assuming that your GMAT goes well and you end up with a 700 score, you should be competitive at top-15 schools, especially if you have some contemporary extras to write about. What have you been up to in terms of your non-professional life since graduation?

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for the info. It seems like the rankings have ASU all over the board. One of the services has them top 25, another top 100.

As for my non-professional experience, there are probably two main activities: I volunteer as a coach at a local high school, and am an active member of my synagogue. I'll be getting married soon, but not sure if schools will look at that as an extra activity.

Thanks again for the info.

Best,

Eitan,

Congratulations on your engagement.

With these additional data points, detailing your community service, I really think that you will be a rock solid candidate at Carey with a mid-600 GMAT. While it may be top-25 according to some rankings, it is not that rigorous a program in terms of its entry standards. Your credentials should be more than enough...
