Would it be advisable to retake the GMAT?

by updesh_d Mon Jun 27, 2011 6:33 am

Dear all

I was hoping to get at least 720 for the GMAT but i only managed to get 700 (Q48, V36). I am hoping to apply to INSEAD or LBS and was wondering whether i should retake the GMAT in order to improve my chances? For example, does getting 730 greatly improve my chances compared to 700?

Btw I am a Malaysian Citizen and I have been working in investment banking for the last 5 years.

I have an undergrad degree in engineering (credit 65%) from University of New South Wales and a masters in commerce degree majoring in finance from Uni of Sydney (distinction 82%).

My extra curriculum include rotary and another worldwide organisation (Fmasons).

Hi updesh,

While your GMAT score is solid and well-balanced, a 730 will likely put you in a different category as a 700. If you opt to stick with the 700, you'll need to rely more on your work experience, leadership and community involvement to help make your case at the schools you list. These will obviously still be important even if you get a 730, but with that score your GMAT now becomes a strength. Hope this was helpful and best of luck!

hey thanks for the reply,

Assuming i do attempt it again, but manage a lower score, would that hurt my chances or would the adcomm solely focus on the highest score? The reason i say this is because my work schedule may not allow me enough time to study.

Also, if i were to apply for one of them in September but the school rejects me, would it typically provide feedback indicating the areas where i can improve?

If this is so, then i may do that and consider retaking the GMAT only if its necessary.

Hi updesh,

Typically schools will only look at your highest score, so you need not worry about the negative impact of a retake. Unfortunately most schools will not provide individual feedback on why an application was rejected, although that's something you'd want to check with the individual schools admissions office as some may offer it.

Best of luck!
