Worried about unbalanced scores

by giles.ritten Tue Jul 26, 2011 11:58 am

Hi there,

I completed the GMAT test last week and got a Q44/V42. My overall score is 710, but I am only in the 66th percentile for quant, and the 95th percentile for verbal.

I was wondering how much of an issue this is? The irony is that I have traditionally been a really strong quant/math student with ~90% at high school and upper seconds at college for pure maths and corporate finance and accounting. I have also been working as a management consultant for a year, which has been quite intensive on the quant side.

I am wanting to apply to Cambridge and possibly Insead - will the quant score been a big liability? Some recent advice I got was - focus on the essays, mention previous examples of quant capability and say that I'd be willing to do additional quant courses if required. Is that a good option?

Thanks for the help. Giles.

Hi Giles,

The advice you list is aligned with my recommendation as well. One more thing you can do is ask your recommenders to call out in their letters any instances where you demonstrated strong quant skills in your work with them. Overall I suggest you mention and address the weakness, but don't overstate it.

Good luck!
