Working verb/that reset question

by yo4561 Sun Jul 25, 2021 9:39 am

Happy Sunday,

MP gives this example: The teacher is confident that her students mastered the lesson.

MP then explains: When the word “that” appears just after a working verb, it often acts as a reset button in the sentence. A new subject-verb(-object) structure will follow.

To confirm, what is the working verb in the example above, is it "is"?

Many thanks in advance as always.

Yes, the verb is "is."

Often, a verb of being is followed by an adjective--what the teacher "is." I wouldn't be mad if you viewed "is happy" as the whole verb for meaning purposes, even though "happy" is an adjective. This would help show that the "that" does follow the (whole) verb immediately.
