Which school for Finance

by Guest Tue Sep 16, 2008 3:55 pm

Alex,

I am hoping that you could provide me with some insight on which school would be the best for my career path. I plan to go into investment banking or private equity (hope) after finishing school. As of now, I am debating between Georgetown, North Carolina, Texas, and Emory. Could you please rank these schools in order that would provide me with the best foundation and most opportunities for my career path? Also, I plan to move to New York or possibly Chicago after school. Will it be any more challenging to get to one of these locations coming from a certain school? Thanks for your help Alex.

Well, that's if the IB job market has recovered by then.

In bad times, it's hard to get an IB job period, but especially if you're at a non-target school. The schools you mentioned are all non-target schools. If you want an IB job, you really should focus on the top-16 schools (and ideally top-8 schools) if you want face time with the recruiters.

In other words, it won't really matter which of the four schools you go to. No matter what, you're just going to have to hustle and network like crazy - have an "in" through people you know. It's not impossible by any means, but be prepared for a tough job search.
