i think you're approaching sentence correction incorrectly. first, you should not assume that just because there is a split that one option has to be wrong and the other one has to be right. second, you should never ask yourself what is preferable; instead, ask yourself if there is a clear mistake in one of the options. unless you can identify a mistake based on the rules of GMAT grammar, you should keep that answer choice in play..
