Which California MBA programs might best match my profile?

by Eyob Tue May 13, 2008 2:38 pm

hi, Im a recent graduate with a degree in economics from UMD College Parkl. I am about a year out and prior have 5 years of general work experience. I am about to move to London to work for either UBS or Deutsche Bank for the next year in either IB or Operations. While there I will be perusing a minor degree in international business from Cambridge. Before I leave though I'm gonna take the GMAT and from my scores so far plan on getting between 650-700. I'll have a solid reference list and excellent essays since they are my strong suite. So my question is, what MBA programs would you recommend in CA? I've done a little research on LMU, USC, UCLA and Pepperdine... any suggestions or constructive criticisms? Thank you.

I'm not sure what to really tell you because you're not really giving anything to really comment on other than ending the post with an open-ended question.

So you want to do an MBA in California. You've listed a number of schools in socal, and you can also include Stanford, Berkeley and Santa Clara, and you've pretty much covered most of the major MBA programs in the state. As for which ones you should apply to, if you do a bit more research into all these programs, I'm sure you'll have a better idea of which ones you can aim for.

Edit of above

I apologize if I was unclear, I would simply like to know if the above credentials would be sufficient to gain entry into a reputable SoCal school. I'll most likely stay in SoCal upon graduation. As a result, national recognition is not my top priority. Thank you again.

If you're talking about schools such as Pepperdine, Santa Clara, Loyola, Claremont, etc. you'll be fine - they are perfectly fine if you want stay in CA right after b-school -- assuming your GMAT scores are decent (650-700 is good enough). Schools such as USC, UCLA, and Berkeley will be harder to get into, but still do-able.

Hi Alex,

I retook the GMAT today and scored a 700 (49Q,35V). I am a bit disappointed with my score but considering my previous score was 680(49Q, 34V), I believe the latest score is quite representative of my verbal and quant abilities. I will briefly describe my profile

Demography : Male/ Indian /Engineer (Non - IT)

Work Ex : ~5 years now. Last 2 years as Quant Analyst

Job Profile : Quantitative Analyst , Fixed Income Quantitive Research, Fidelity Investments . Shifted from software to Finance.( All my work has been pretty quant focused. Even when I was working as a software engineer my work was more quant oriented.I used to work in computational geometry domain earlier)

Undergrad : Mechanical Engineering ,IIT Bombay (the best in India) , GPA : 6.52/10 (not sure how this translates on a 4 point scale).

Other Qualifications : Cleared CFA Level1 last year, planning to take FRM this year.

Resume : Good according to me. If you are interested I can send a copy to you. I really take pride in my work because none of my work has been run of the mill work. I have always give preference to job content over other things in my career.

Extras : Very good in college (event organization ,sports ), ]
After college : I regularly participate in corporate tournaments.(nothing much here)

Leadership : Recruited people from campus and have been mentoring them for last 1 year.

Other information : 1.the only person in the Quant team with Bachelors degree. Others are Masters or PhDs.
2.In college, I was one of the few people who got an international internship and it was one of the highest paid internship
3.Worked as a part time tutor for physics and maths.

Goals Post MBA : short term : Front office job in a investment management firm i.e. an analyst in a investment management firm.

Long term : Portfolio manager in a firm like Fidelity.

Reco : One from my group lead , one from my ex Managing Director Research. I have another reco from my mentor in my previous organization. Although his designation may not be as high as that of these people but he holds my work and my abilities in very high regard.

I am targeting Chicago, Tepper ,NYU, LSB(also looking at the MIF program here),Rottman, ISB(Indian school). This is my list but I will like to know your thoughts on this list.

What do you think I should do at this stage to improve my chances at these schools? Also if you could suggest a few shcools that are within my reach.

I understand my GMAT score is pretty average for these schools but is it good enough to offset the low GPA. Although a GPA of 6.5 plus is considered a first class I am not exactly proud of my GPA.
