When to use 'have'

Ex:
Scientists have trained their telescopes on Arp 229, a pair of merging galaxies, and saw stars exploding in numbers far greater than expected.

1. and saw stars exploding in numbers far greater than expected
2. and saw stars exploding in numbers far greater than they were expecting
3. and saw stars exploding in far greater numbers than expected
4. and seen stars exploding in far greater numbers than being expected
5. and have seen stars exploding in far greater numbers than expected

Is (5) the right answer? BUt (1) seems right too.
