What is x? DS Problem

by ArpitS975 Thu Jun 19, 2014 5:13 am

Question: What is x?

Statement 1: x=4y-4
Statement 2: xy = 8

Problem is from 5th Edition Algebra Manhattan GMAT, Page 71, Chapter 5.

The answer in the book is E.

I had originally come up with C as both statements together provide you with a quadratic equation which you can the solve for x.

Why is this? Just need some clarification.

Thanks!

What is the quadratic, and how did you use it to solve for x? What did you get for x? I got two different values; see if you can find them both. Remember, when you have a quadratic, you need to be actively looking for two solutions.
