Unusual question..would appreciate frank answers..

Hi
This is not about my GMAT score or about evaualting my essay. I have already got an offer of admission from my preferred b school. I am an unusual candidate for a full time MBA, I am an HR (human resources) professional with 4 years of good wk ex. I would like an opinion on how unusual is it for HR professionals to do an MBA. Is it worth it? Do organizations value an HR professional with an MBA? Or they dont care? In short, have you EVER heard of an HR person doing an MBA and then getting back into HR??
My personal reasons are clear, I know about my field, but am clueless about the other aspects of a business, hence I want to do an MBA in order to be a better, well rounded HR professional. Does that make sense or would it be wiser to gain indepth knowledge on another aspect of business, say, marketing or operations in b school so that, if required, I could do a career switch?? Even though I do not have ANY background in marketing or ops or whatever. I still have the option to not do this MBA and continue working.
Please help!
Thanks

Hi! I see real value in an MBA for an HR professional. There is so much technical knowledge now required to work in HR, so an MBA will help with that. In addition, as you grow in your HR role, you will likely manage others - so an MBA will be useful. Lastly, an HR department can be the hub for leadership ideas at a company. Best practices can be developed and shared through the HR team. I think a business school education will help you define where leadership is lacking within your organization and how you can work on improving it. In addition, there is a big business in HR consulting, an area where you might decide you want to go post-MBA.

Best of luck,

Rachel Beck
