Unlike the many winter greens that have tough leaves and thu

by dheeraj787 Wed Feb 26, 2014 5:58 am

Unlike the many winter greens that have tough leaves and thus require a lengthy cooking time, those of escarole need little or no cooking.
A. many winter greens that have tough leaves and thus require a lengthy cooking time, those of escarole need
B. many winter greens that have tough leaves and thus require a lengthy cooking time, escarole needs
C. tough leaves of many winter greens and that they require for a lengthy cooking time, escarole needs
D. tough leaves of many winter greens and the requirement that they have a lengthy cooking time, those of escarole need
E. lengthy cooking time required by the many winter greens with tough leaves, escarole needs

My doubts:

1. Why not D ? becuase in D there is comaparison of the form :

Unlike X of Y, those of Z :: Unlike the tough leaves of many winter greens......, the tough leaves of escarole...

What is wrong in this?

2. Why not C?

Pls explain. Thanks.

In choice D, nothing is wrong with the specific component that you're examining, but "tough leaves ... AND the requirement..." is complete nonsense.
Unless both of those things"”(a) leaves and (b) a requirement (!!)"”somehow contrast with the leaves of escarole, that sentence doesn't work. So it doesn't work.

Take a look at the 2 elements of the comparison ("Unlike ___..., ___...") in that choice.

In fact, if you analyze that comparison in precisely the same way you analyzed the comparison in choice D, you'll understand exactly why it is incorrect.
