Understanding My Verbal Score - Need Help

by shilpa.madduri1 Fri Dec 28, 2012 10:48 pm

Hi,

I took my GMAT today. I scored a 620(Q 48, V 27) and I am totally dejected by my verbal score. I am equally surprised to see the score because I knew the questions in verbal got a lot tougher as I was going through the section. I got two bolface CRs(one bold face CR around 11th question and another around 35th question)and 4 RCs, one being very very dense long passage (around 24th - 29th question string). I really thought I was doing well because the questions did not seem any easier.

I am totally dejected and am unable to understand where to start studying again, because I have exhausted OG, Manhattan practice material, Kaplan, Verbal Review. I have been doing really good with analysis in SC, CR and RC and had reached an accuracy level of 95% in SC, 70-80% in CR and 70% in RC.

Ron / Stacey - Please help me understand what could have gone wrong in the scoring when I was getting tough questions all through:(.. Also, please advise how to prepare my next study plan. I am planning to take GMAT again in the next 4-5 weeks.
I have taken a couple of GMAT Prep Tests and have solved all the questions from OG. Below is the track of my scores

GMAT PREP3: 760( repeated questions) - Dec 26th, 2012
GMAT PREP2: 770 - Dec 24th, 2012
GMAT PREP1: 690 - Dec 19th, 2012
KAPLAN 2: 710 - Sep 10th, 2012
KAPLAN 1: 690 - Sept 1st, 2012
MGMAT : 680 - Nov 28th, 2012
MGMAT: 630 - August, 2012
MGMAT: 650 - August 2012

I'm sorry you had a rough test day. It's important for us to try to figure out what might have happened so that we can then figure out what to do about it.

I'm wondering about a couple of things. Could you have been having timing problems? (Note: finishing the section on time is only one measure - you can have serious timing problems even when finishing the section on time.)

You can use this article to analyze your most recent MGMAT CAT:

Then come back here and tell us the results of your analysis and what you think you should do based on that analysis. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)

Next, could you have been experiencing mental fatigue? (This doesn't feel like physical fatigue.) Here are some examples of how mental fatigue feels:

Did you get good sleep the two nights before? Did you have something to eat and drink throughout the test to keep your mental energy up? Etc.

Also, read this:

Do any of those factors apply in your case?
