Undergrad and Masters at the same school?

by dogfood60 Sun May 03, 2009 12:40 pm

I hope this is in the right forum, if not I do apologize.

I have heard that getting your undergrad and your MBA at the same school is looked down upon. Infact my uncle did it (decades ago) and the companies he's worked for weren't enthusiastic about it (FYI he's not in the business field.) On the other hand I have actually had several professors who got their undergrad and MBA at the same school and acquired there PhD elsewhere, and even one who obtained all 3 from the same school. So is it acceptable to get both from the same school, or does there need to be a change?

Hello,

Thanks for your inquiry. The decision of where to pursue an MBA is a very personal one and there are no hard and fast rules about where you should or should not go. If you feel that the MBA program at the school where you got your undergraduate degree is the best one for you, you should pursue it. Companies rarely have a bias against particular universities and are not likely to frown on the fact that you went to the same school for both degrees. Most importantly, your career trajectory will be determined by the actions you take, rather than the school you attended. Best of luck on your applications!

Sincerely,
