Trying to find my range.... unique background

by dlesser Wed Feb 22, 2012 4:35 pm

Dear All,

I graduate in 2010 with an undergraduate degree in Near Eastern Studies, with a minor in Arabic language and literature. Immediately following graduation (June 2010), I moved to the Middle East to become fluent in Arabic. I wanted to finish what I started and I couldn't become fluent in the US.

I've been teaching economics and marketing in an international American high school for two years now. I was a freelance corporate English trainer for roughly a year until I decided to start my own English training company specifically designed for corporations in the Middle East. It was successful until it was shut down by protectionism laws in the region.

After scoring a superior on my Arabic ACFTL exam, I'm ready to come to the US and apply for MBA programs to gain the valuable business education I missed out on during undergraduate.

The question is.... what is my range? Am I top ten? Do I have shot at the Wharton MBA/Lauder MA international affairs program? Are there any MBA programs specifically designed for people like me (wanting to do international management)?

Undergraduate GPA: 3.2 Accumulative / 3.9 Major
GRE: 720V 760Q W5.0
WE: 2-3 years
Goals: Gain the necessary business education that I didn't get as an undergraduate... work in international management for a multinational corporation

Thanks for your help.

Hi! It sounds like you have an interesting story on many fronts. Not only have you lived in an interesting part of the world, but you began your own business - and even though it was closed, you can draw on ALL your experiences in your business school applications. Your GRE score is also strong, which should help your candidacy for a top business school. As for where you should apply, I am not well enough versed in international management MBA programs to properly guide you. I can recommend you looking at the web sites of the top schools and seeing which have curriculums that fit your interests.

Best of luck,

Rachel Beck
