Top 10?

by ceej994 Fri Nov 12, 2010 4:33 am

Age: 24
Info: White/Male
GPA: 3.6 from a top 40 US institution (top 20 Business School) with a BS in Accounting and a BS in Finance
GMAT: 730
Work Experience: Three years in a progressing role with a Big Four accounting firm. Ranked and identified as a high performing staff and recently promoted to senior. Experience with financial reporting, SOX 404 controls compliance, SAS 70 audits, and advanced financial modeling.
Extracurricular: Co-developer of a top-200 and a top-1000 downloaded game application for the Android mobile market. Strong passing for gaming.
Career Aspiration: Hope to obtain a top ten MBA in order to join a premier software developer/publisher in a financial reporting role. With two years of experience, plan to continue progression or embark on own game development upstart.

What are my chances at a top 10?

Also, is this industry looked down upon by admissions committees?

Hi ceej994,

Thanks for writing in. Your GMATs are strong and you've shown early career success. I think you would be competitive in the top-10. You may be a year shy of the work experience some schools are looking for -- but you can balance that out by explaining why you want an MBA now. Since you are focusing on a rapidly growing market, I think that's a reasonable argument for you to make.

I don't think schools would look down on gaming at all. You clearly state you want to work in an executive finance role and then start your own company -- these are very traditional MBA goals, regardless of the industry.

Good luck!
